Newham Labour Group are seeking a highly motivated, well-organised and experienced campaign organiser fulfil the campaigning requirements for Newham Labour Group as the Mayor and Cllrs gear up for the London local elections in May 2022. The role of Group Campaign Organiser will be to support the campaigning, organising and mobilisation efforts of the Mayor and local councillors in Newham; and support delivery of campaigning and training content via the group’s campaign platform: the Newham Labour Campaign Academy.

Promoting the achievements of the Labour led council administration and the Labour Party amongst local voters and residents in the borough will be the priority focus of the Campaign Organiser working alongside local Labour Party members, CLP officers, the Local Government Committee, Labour Parliamentary Candidates and their agents; and the Labour Assembly Member. The role of the Campaign Organiser will be critical in promoting the achievements of the Labour-led Council and galvanising local support for Labour in the run up to the London local elections on 5th May 2022.

Newham is a young, vibrant and diverse borough shaped by a strong sense of local identity and long tradition of political activism in the local Labour parties. Labour controls the Council, where Labour’s Directly Elected Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz and all 60 councillors have been elected on a radical and transformative Labour manifesto which puts community wealth building and inclusive economy strategies right at the top of Labour’s agenda locally to address poverty and inequality, the housing crisis, youth safety and climate emergency.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced organiser, skilled in a variety of campaign, social change and social movement building techniques to work with a dynamic Labour Council leader and Group, in collaboration with local parties, local member so that Labour in Newham builds an authentic people powered and community based support base to initiate positive social change for local residents – in line with the participatory democracy agenda being pursued by the Labour Mayor.

 Strong communication and social media skills including knowledge of how to maximise different media channels to communicate political messages, website content management, a methodical
approach to record keeping coupled with IT and data analysis skills (essential);
 Ability to organise recruitment and retention activities, events (e.g. training events);
 Knowledge and understanding of the Party organisation at branch, constituency and regional
level;
 Good understanding of Labour local government and national Labour Party policy, combined with
a keen interest in current affairs and a commitment to Labour Party values (essential);
 A comprehensive understanding of systems employed by the Labour Party is essential and an aptitude to learn new systems quickly (desirable);
 A good track record of Labour Party and social action campaigning, including knowledge of campaigning techniques, supporter mobilisation, working with volunteers, fundraising schemes
and demonstrable campaigning experience in elections (essential).

2. Campaign Organiser role description
 Working with the Labour Mayor, councillors, local members, MPs and GLA member to organise borough-wide campaigning activity to promote progress on the Mayor and Labour Group manifesto; including key achievements by the Labour Executive and ward based progress by
councillors. This includes telephone and door-to-door canvassing using Dialogue and Labour Doorstep App;
 Monitoring and tracking voter contact rates across all wards and supporting councillors to meet their obligations of their Labour Councillor contracts;
 Drafting campaign materials and online content to demonstrate the achievements of the Labourled Council amongst local voters, including ward specific campaign materials;
 Managing and updating the Newham Labour Group website and social media platforms, including the creation of content;
 Helping to co-ordinate campaigning and training sessions with ward councillors, branch members and Labour supporting volunteers;
 Help support the group Leader and officers with organising Labour Group fundraising efforts.
3. Specific Responsibilities
 To work with Labour Group members, East Ham and West Ham CLP stakeholders and the relevant Regional Organiser, to motivate and organise local members in the countdown to London local elections on the 5th May 2022 alongside promoting the achievements of the
Labour administration that leads Newham Council;
 To lead, support and organise campaigning activity as determined by leader of Labour Group (or their nominee) following her discussions with the Labour Group Executive and group members through the auspices of the Newham Labour Campaign Academy;
 To work with the London Region colleagues, including the Regional Organiser and Communications Officer where appropriate;
 To provide training to Group members on election techniques, production of newsletters, voter I/D (doorstep and telephone), registration and postal votes;
 To identify campaign leaders at branch and CLP level, to support the promotion of Labour Group campaigns and the Labour Administration’s progress in delivering the 2018 Local
Election manifesto;
 To support the development of local fundraising and fundraising schemes to ensure the Labour Group has adequate funding to organise, campaign and contest elections;
 To support the development of communication plans targeting branches, members and other units of the party and affiliated organisations in Newham to promote the Mayor and the
Cabinet’s achievements in the Council and activities;
 To work with candidates, elected representatives and local parties to identify, develop, motivate and organise members and supporters;
 To support plans for localised policy forums and a 2022 manifesto development programme led by leader of Group; alongside other policy development opportunities being led by the national Labour Party, and public engagement visits by the Shadow front bench.
 To report on the level of all activity, organisation and the effective operation of Party rules in the area to Group Leader, as well as the relevant Regional Organiser or the Regional Director where appropriate.

Other key information:
 A driver’s licence is desirable but not essential;
 Line management will be the Group leader or their nominee;
 The successful candidate will be required to start as soon as possible, subject to any notice period required by their current employer;
 Subject to risk assessments and the Covid-19 situation in Newham and London, the employment of the Newham Group Campaign Organiser will be based at the Newham Labour Group Offices in East Ham, and working from home flexibility is available;
 The successful candidate’s formal employer will be the Labour Party, and remuneration is paid directly by the Labour Party, who in turn are paid by Newham Labour Group;
